Security Responsibilities

Item Code 10834

This course is intended to give students an appreciation of the maritime security system conceived by the IMO and to demonstrate how the various entities will work together. The relative roles of Contracting Governments, Recognized Security Organizations, the Company Security Officer, the Ship Security Officer, the Port Facility Security Officer, and other vessel and port security personnel are also discussed.

Specific information is provided on contracting governments, recognized security organizations, shipping companies, ships, port facilities, as well as those persons with security responsibilities.

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, as well as the U.S. Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA), requires specialized maritime security training for port facility and vessel personnel. This Maritime Security Management & Operations Compliance Series was specifically developed to meet the mandatory security standards set forth in the ISPS Code. Non-compliance with ISPS Code requirements can result in loss of revenue and the potential for increased liability in the event of a security incident.
